1964 yılında doğan Gürkan Erkula, ilköğretimine İtalya’da başlayıp Türkiye’de bitirdi ve orta ve lise eğitimini TED Ankara Koleji’nde tamamladı. Hacettepe Üniversitesi İngilizce Tıp Fakültesini 1989 yılında bitirdikten sonra SSK Okmeydanı Hastanesi’nde Ortopedi ve Travmatoloji eğitimini tamamlayarak 1995 yılında Ortopedi ve Travmatoloji uzmanı ünvanını aldı.

1997-2003 yılları arasında Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi’nde öğretim üyesi olarak görev yaptı. 1999 ve 2000 yılları arasinda Johns Hopkins Üniversitesi Ortopedi bölümünde çalıştı. 2003 ile 2010 yılları arasında yine Johns Hopkins Üniversitesi Ortopedi Bölümünde öğretim üyesi ve Assistant Professor ünvanı ile çalıştı.

2010 yılı Haziran ayında Türkiye’ye kesin dönüş yaparak serbest hekim olarak çalışan Gürkan Erkula, evli ve bir çocuk babasıdır.
